Symptomatic cervical disc herniation is quite rare in the population. It occurs most often in the 5th decade of life and is more common in female patients. It can cause neck pain, arm pain, and weakness and/or numbness in the arm or hand.
Many cervical disc herniations respond to conservative management, including the use of analgesic medications, physiotherapy, or injections, or some form of physical manipulation.
Some, however, require surgery to relieve the symptoms.
A specialist surgical opinion is valuable to direct appropriate medical care. Most patients seen in surgical consultation do not require surgery and are managed conservatively.
